How far in advance do you alum your papers?
Hi Everyone, When applying alum to paper, how long can it be kept? I've seen comments that vary hugely, and even suggest opposites conditions: - alumed papers can can be kept indefinitely, - alumed papers can be kept indefinitely as long as they are dry and stored in low humidity, - the alum should ...

Re: Grainy paints / What do you use?
Yes, I also find that the black washes off much more easily than the other paints.

Purpose of borax?
Does anyone add borax to their carrageenan? I recently read a book on marbling, and they suggest preparing the size with borax added. Is it used in this case to soften the water or balance the pH?

Re: Which type of carrageenan?
Hi, Thanks for the replies so far. Can anyone outline exactly (i.e. brand, source and how to prepare) what they use, successfully, for paper stock, mordant, and size? I think I'm OK with paint/ink? I hope that doesn't sound too demanding! People obviously can get this to work, so I'd really just lik...

Re: Which type of carrageenan?
Does it adhere to the paper? Is that normal? The type I'm using forms a firm layer probably a couple of millimetres thick. The paint seems to stick better to the gelled carrageenan than the paper.

Which type of carrageenan?
Hi Everyone, I'm attempting to learn to marble with carrageenan and acrylic colours. I'm having trouble with the size, though, I think... I'm following instructions that I've read a few times online and in books: 2 tbsp + 2 tsp per gallon of water, blend, leave until the bubbles have gone. I've boug...

Paint washing off
Hello, I'm trying to lean the process, and my first attempt looked good... Until it all washed off in a sheet, leaving almost completely clean paper. I used alum at 10% w/v (10g in 100mL). I wiped it on and left it until it was damp but not dry. Should it be drier perhaps? My alum powder, although d...
