A question about marbling in the UK in a hardwater area.

What things should I add to my size as I live in a very hard water area.

(please only suggest UK household products, as similar foreign brand's may contain different chemicals).

for example, could I add that water softener stuff you put in the dishwasher?

Re: alternate size

methocellulose, carrageenan and ammonia.

Lots of online sources of information say its important to use a teaspoon of household ammonia (which has a high pH) when using methocellulose or carrageenan to help it dissolve properly in the solution, otherwise you find the solution is thick at the bottom and weak at the top. 1) is this really ne...

Re: If I am adding several layers on top of my marbling, do I need to re-apply allum?

Yes, alum needs to be carefully re-applied after previous layer has been rinsed and dried well. Acrylic paints dry with a kind of plastic finish. Once they are dry, more acrylic will not stick. The second time around, do the alum thing and proceed. But the second marbling will stick only to the pap...

Are the 'off-the-shelf' marbling inks any good or are they snake oil?

for example, online there are the following big brands and a lot of other vague stuff, to me it looks like a generic mixture of acrylic ink, possibly with sufficant additive. I'm an artist so I've got loads of paint additives already and I dont want to waste money on snake oil. for example... https:...

If I am adding several layers on top of my marbling, do I need to re-apply allum?

Re: Which type of carrageenan?

Hi Sorry I can't help with the paper questions but I do know that the only successful carrageenan is lambda Only drawback is that it only usually lasts about 5-6 days before the smell starts to get overpowering At that point the paint does break down like it's been shattered I found it quite diffic...
