papers for marbling

I would appreciate input on papers folks use, gsm and composition if possible, along with the coloring agent and the type of size used......recipes not necessary. Thanks.

I apply alum, dry, and iron the paper. Have used these papers up to a couple of months later. However, I have noticed that papers which have alum applied several weeks previously tend to get brittle. I assume the paper is breaking down. Alum will degrade cellulose over time. This is very noticeable ...

Yes, alum needs to be carefully re-applied after previous layer has been rinsed and dried well. Acrylic paints dry with a kind of plastic finish. Once they are dry, more acrylic will not stick. The second time around, do the alum thing and proceed. But the second marbling will stick only to the pap...

I have read that buffering on paper interferes with color attachment to the paper. Does anyone have thought on this?

Sulfite papers (all wood pulp) are too tender to stand up to all the wet-and-dry, unless they are more than 90 to 100# in weight. Paper which is good for printmaking is usually pretty good for marbling. These papers are usually all cotton, tend to have one 'toothy' side and be somewhat absorbent. Th...
