What things should I add to my size as I live in a very hard water area.

(please only suggest UK household products, as similar foreign brand's may contain different chemicals).

for example, could I add that water softener stuff you put in the dishwasher?

Try making your size with distilled water which can be purchased locally.
Hard water can give you problems and adding anything more to your size to soften water might make it worse, not better. I used steam distilled water for many years, purchased in containers at grocery stores, and size lasted for days without any problems other than deteriorating in thickness from several days of use. At that point I would begin to experiment... with many happy accidents and interesting results. Good luck.

I've been doing pretty much the same for years now. No problems so far. Don't be afraid to experiment a little, Myra.
